According to a report released on June 24, a hailstone that was collected in Hondo, Texas, after a hailstorm, has been confirmed by meteorologists as the largest on record in state history. The hailstone, which was photographed and shared on social media, was placed in a freezer soon after it hit the ground. Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety’s hail experts coordinated with the National Weather Service in San Antonio to assess and perform a 3D scan of the large hailstone on May 6.
The experts found that the hailstone measured a mammoth 6.4 inches in diameter (about the size of a honeydew melon) and weighed 1.26 pounds, making it the largest stone ever scanned by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.
